professional portfolio

The professional portfolio will be a collection of items suitable for use in your pursuit of "what's next," whether it be a job, graduate school, or something else entirely. Unlike the departmental assessment portfolio, these documents will represent your transferrable skill set with a specific aim in mind; it will be constructed for both print and digital distribution but will be shared digitally with the department as part of the end-of-semester showcase. Contents include the following:
  • Cover/title page
  • Table of contents
  • (optional) Reflective cover letter of no more than 1.5 single-spaced pages addressed to the Department of English faculties. Discuss the purpose of your portfolio, why you chose the items you submitted, what the selected items say about you as a reader/writer and about your development as a reader/writer of English studies, and your future plans.
  • An employment resume geared toward a specific job or a CV.
Additional materials include
  • A resume of your English studies. In other words, a list of classes you took in language, literature, writing, or a closely related field at UNG or at other institutes of higher education. Be sure to include semester and instructor of record.
  • A selection of 3-4 pieces that best reflect your skills. These documents can be from any context -- classwork, individual projects, created specifically for the portfolio, etc. Format these documents to fit the context of the portfolio (not MLA formatting), and consider using a sentence or two at the top of each example to provide your rationale for including it in the portfolio.
Consider document design as you craft this portfolio. It should make a positive visual impression AND should include documents that are carefully revised and edited.
